San Francisco’s Own Traditional & Irish Rock Artists In Concert At Slim’s For St Patrick’s Day
Boston may be home to the Dropkick Murphys and Los Angeles may have birthed Flogging Molly, London may have given us The Pogues and Dublin may claim the widest array of successful Irish bands & artists – The Dubliners, U2, Thin Lizzy, Sinèad O’Connor – but San Francisco has it’s own traditional & Irish rock artists, two of whom are coming together for St. Patrick’s Day this year for a true Irish-American roots rock dance party: The Hooks in concert with Lucia Comnes & Her Rockin’ Irish Band at Slim’s on Tuesday, March 17th.
Both bands, known for rocking their audiences with high energy sets of groove-oriented pop and folk melodies, are led by songwriters committed to writing infectious music of the people. With origins in San Francisco and Ireland, their songs spin Irish and American narratives that are both timeless and relevant. Throw in their eye for fashion and you have a show that is nearly as pleasing to the eye as it is the ear.
The Hooks were formed by brothers Keith and Ronan Mulligan, both born in the working-class town of Sligo, Ireland. From an early age you could hear them playing loud, cheap guitars and wailing Bowie covers in a shed they built behind their parents house. Fast forward 10 years, a plane ride to San Francisco and a few pints and compatriots later, the Mulligan brothers were joined by bassist, Chet Hamby and drummer, Colin Delaney, and The Hooks were born.
Lean, mean, and tight as a bodhran drum, their eyes (and guitars) are pointed toward their homeland of County Sligo for inspiration. Vacillating between the agit-pop driven punk rock they are famous for, interspersed with galloping Irish Trad played fast and loud, sometimes in Gaelic and reminiscent of rebellion, these gunslingers are carrying on that noble Celtic tradition with a twist. Prolific songwriters with those indelible ‘hooks’ for which they are known and named, they bring over four decades of musicianship to the table. Representing their own Sligo as well as San Francisco’s underbelly, these Irish rockers regularly tour America and Europe, sometimes alongside Shane MacGowan, lead singer and songwriter from The Pogues.
Lucia Comnes & Her Rockin’ Irish Band is a five-piece folk powerhouse that combines traditional Irish music with influences from rock, americana and bluegrass to produce a fresh and invigorating take on the Irish sound. The band’s leader, Lucia Comnes, is a San Francisco-born singer-songwriter who rocks a mean fiddle and guitar, is known for her original songs and contemporary interpretations of Irish, Balkan and American folk music. Her song ‘No Hiding Place’ was recently recognized with two notable awards by the Dallas Songwriters Association in Texas. Her voice was described by the San Francisco Chronicle as “singular… embedded with soul and spirit.”
Lucia is backed by the force of her Rockin’ Irish Band, all members with Irish names to make up for the lack of any Irish trace left in her own (her paternal grandmother’s name was McNulty), who are focused on delivering the band’s melodious music and keeping the fires raging on the dance floor. Burke Trieschmann plays a mighty rhythm guitar and shreds on his harmonica between class vocals, Kyle Caprista is a legend and a savage beast on drums, Mike Anderson plays deadly bass lines on the acoustic and electric, and Kyle Patrick O’Brien towers above it all, keeping it sweet on the mandolin alongside Lucia’s fierce crafting on the fiddle.
Between playing at many trad festivals in Ireland, singing with the acclaimed Kitka, accompanying the American folk icon, Joan Baez, opening for Paul Brady in concert, and collaborating regularly Liam Ó Maonlaí (Hothouse Flowers), Lucia is the prime candidate for leading such a band. San Francisco’s Chuck Poling of The California Bluegrass Association says, “Perhaps her most valuable talent is her powerful imagination. An imagination that breathes vivid imagery into the lyrics of her songs and infuses her fiddling with the spirit of the ancient tones, be they from Kilkenny, Kentucky, or Kosovo.”
Together, these bands represent the next generation of Irish-American crossover music coming out the San Francisco Bay Area. Both bands have new albums slotted for release in 2015 and both albums were recorded at Berkeley’s historic Fantasy Studios. The Hooks present ‘Social Climbing’ and Lucia Comnes presents ‘Love, Hope & Tyranny.’ This is one St. Patrick’s Day Concert not to be missed!
